Module 2 - Feasibility Study

Preparation of  a detailed concept of all restoration measures for the river channel and floodplain in the pilot river section between km 69 - km 53. This concept will include the selection of appropriate combination of restoration measures, which will be summarized in various scenarios in order to find out the best possible one via optimization process, using the tools of numerical and physical modeling and with regard to the present river processes. Relevant information, data and knowledge obtained within several research projects (Slovak and Austrian) will be used including developed numerical (1D, 2D hydrodynamics models) and physical models (necessary updating will be done). These tools will be used particularly for assessment of the impact of proposed restoration measures on flood protection. Besides that 2D model will be used particularly for evaluation of velocities and shear stress distribution in the river channel and floodplain. These results will be significant for overall evolution of a sediment transport, river channel stability, river bank stability as well as for ecological considerations. Draft of a final detail concept of all restoration measures (the best combination) will be submitted to the Slovak - Austrian Transboundary Waters Commission for approval before the beginning of the planning phase.

Sampling of the river bed material in the meanders, which are proposed for full integration. Samples were taken in the areas of inflow, outflow  parts and from the meander apex.
The quality of the bed material will analyzed  in the National Reference Laboratory in VUVH.

Construction and operation of the physical model - October 2011 - September 2012

Physical model constructed (VÚVH-hydraulic laboratory) for selected river section where the twins partly reconnected meanders (km 66,5 - km 65) will be completely integrated into the river system.  Model is built in distorted scale 1:100/40 with mobile river bed. It has been used for analyses of flow dynamics and sediment transport for proposed scenarios of meander integration and optimizing of restoration scenarios.

Sampling of the river bed was done along the whole pilot section. Samples were taken by steel sampler form the boat in 17 localities within distance aprox. 900 m - always in the middle of the channel. Samples were also taken form the left and right side of the channel in selected localities. Altogether 45 samples of bed material were taken and analyzed in VÚVH laboratory. Based on the results grain size distribution curves were developed.

Detailed survey of the present state of the bank pavement focused on identification of the pavement type, survey of the deposits created in the area above the berm (selected localities).
In the frame of this field survey also position of fish huts built along both river banks, were identified in the sections which will be influenced by restoration measures.

Field excursion in STRÁŽNICE (ČR) - OSYPANÉ BŘEHY - Natural meandring river section - November 2011

The visit of the national reservation on the Morava river - Strážnice in Czech Republic. It is unique natural river section created by three meanders which are freely meandering in the river valley. As a result a valuable wide lateral and point bars (gravel and sand) can be observed. High sandy terrace developed 10 m above valley bottom.
Natural meandering section of the Morava river in the locality Osypané břehy  is very similar to the pilot area in the section km 64 - 66 (SK-AT) before the river was regulated. Meanders integration considered in the project MoRe would allow to restore previous natural conditions.

Investigation of the deposits in cut-off meanders in the area of inflow and outflow. Evaluation of the deposits extent - deposit depth and composition of the sediment layers. Samples were taken from the sediment layers for analyses of physical characteristics (granulometry).

Detailed excursion of the pilot section on the Morava river with participation of all project partners.  Field survey was focused on the evaluation of the present state in the river channel and floodplain, riverine area , bank pavement, separated and reconnected meanders.
